Ryerson's GCM program holds successful job fair

Ryerson GCM Job FairGraphic Communications Management (GCM) has hosted yet another successful job fair. Like every year, the event began and ended with the loud chime of a gong. Further to the GCM tradition, the print and graphic arts industry did not disappoint with their turnout and support.

Each year, employers gather to interview graduates in the early afternoon and interns in the evening. This year's Job Fair was held on Thursday, March 4. At the end of a long day there was very positive feedback about the calibre of GCM students. The best compliment to the school, as well as a true testament to the its success, is an intern or grad being hired.

On average, each student had 5 interviews, seemingly making the difficulties of the economic climate forgotten - at least for one night. Everyone was very positive, with smiles from both the employers and students lighting up the busy cafeteria. Gillian Mothersill, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Design shared her firm optimism by saying: "This was a very successful Job Fair for both interns and grads. Many of the companies attending Job Fair commented on the poise, maturity and enthusiasm of the students they interviewed during the evening."

For many students, this is a very stressful event. With the current economic climate that stress is much higher. However, all of these worries seemingly fell into the background during the event.

Hiring a new graduate or intern is an investment for any company as the time and resources to train them add up quickly. Many would argue however that the benefits outweigh those drawbacks. Students bring a new perspective on old ideas. Many are now in agreement that things cannot and will not stay the same for our industry. What better way to figure out the future than hiring our future?

Ryerson's GCM program has always been very fortunate, in that the support of the print industry has meant innovative, up-to-date equipment and technology for the school. As such, by hiring GCM students and grads, employers may even gain expertise in new areas. Lastly, new graduates typically also have a more economical price tag. Of course, if budgets cannot support expansion it is still possible to get all of those benefits by hiring an intern for a 4 month short-term commitment.

If you missed the job fair but are looking to hire a grad or intern, you are encouraged to get in touch with the school at 416-979-5050.
