View from the publisher: August 2013

I hope you managed to take a break on Canada Day and think about how very lucky we all are to live in such a great country. We are a nation made up of immigrants, myself included. As proof, did you know that the Canadian immigration rate is the highest per capita in the world, followed by the U.S. and Australia? I attended Canada Day celebrations in Newmarket and saw so many smiling faces from every corner of the world singing the praises of the country that accepted them with open arms. It made me very proud to be a Canadian. I’m sure our founding fathers who brought the other provinces into confederation in 1867 – including fellow Irishman Thomas D’Arcy McGee – would have loved the way Canada turned out.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t congratulate the Chicago Blackhawks for their Stanley Cup win. The best team during the 2013 season also proved to be the best in the playoffs. Added congratulations go to the 19 Canadians on the team. The Blue Jays at press time were still in last place in their division. It looks like a wild-card spot might be their only hope for the postseason. Fall will tell.

Two of our industry’s best trade shows are on the horizon: Print 13 and Graphics Canada. Print 13, the drupa of North America, is September 8-12 at Chicago’s McCormick Place and we hope you will stop by our booth. Over 500 exhibitors have contracted space so far. One of the most exciting additions is the premiere of the co-located Converting and Package Printing Expo (CPP Expo) that will boost attendance from the growing packaging industry and showcase the latest equipment and product technologies. There are over 64 co-located conferences, meetings, seminars, networking and user group events and receptions planned.

Graphics Canada, Canada’s largest graphics, printing and converting show, will take place November 21-23 at the International Centre in Mississauga. At press time, Fujifilm, Canon, Konica Minolta, Ricoh, Epson, Sydney Stone, Ernest Green, GBC, Müller Martini, ND Graphics, Proveer, Pressdown, Esko, Printer’s Parts, Access Imaging and Masterwork USA were some of the big names exhibiting.

We are producing this year’s Show Guide and are currently involved in selling booth space. If you need to book space or get into the official Graphics Canada Show Guide, please contact us at 1-877-513-3999. Efforts are already underway to make this year’s event the best ever.

With summer weather upon us, I sincerely hope you will be able to take some much deserved rest and relaxation.

As always, stay positive and stay focused.
